On the morning of 18 April, Russian troops launched another missile attack on Kharkiv, hitting a multi-storey residential building. According to preliminary reports, a ballistic missile with a cluster warhead was used. This was reported by Mayor Igor Terekhov and the head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration Oleg Sinegubov.
“An enemy missile hit a densely populated area of Kharkiv. It hit a multi-storey building. There may be people under the rubble,” Terekhov wrote.
According to official reports, at least one person was killed. The number of injured has risen to over 60. At least 13 people have been hospitalised, including two children aged 4 and less than 3 years. Four of the injured are in serious condition.
At least 20 multi-storey buildings and more than 30 private households were damaged in the attack. Some of the buildings have been heavily damaged, and some homes have been completely destroyed. Rescuers are working at the scene and are clearing the rubble.
Ihor Terekhov noted that the missile had a cluster munition, which significantly expanded the area of damage. The strike on the city was part of a wider attack: explosions were also heard in Sumy and Dnipro that morning.
The authorities urge residents to follow safety rules and not to ignore air raid warnings.
