Moscow, 23 April 2025 – The Kremlin has said that negotiators on the settlement of the war in Ukraine still have to overcome significant differences and work out numerous nuances before a deal is possible. This was stated by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the latest developments in diplomatic efforts to end the conflict unleashed by Russia.

The statement came amid the breakdown of talks between the US, Ukraine and European officials. In particular, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio unexpectedly cancelled his visit to London, which led to a decrease in the level of negotiations. This happened a few days after US President Donald Trump warned that Washington might withdraw from the role of mediator if there is no progress in reaching a deal in the near future.

According to Reuters, the US has proposed certain ideas to end the conflict, but the details of these proposals remain unconfirmed. Peskov refused to comment on them publicly, calling some media reports “fake news”. He stressed that the talks should be held in confidence.

“We continue our contacts, but of course, there are many nuances in the settlement that need to be worked out, and the positions of the parties need to be brought closer together. This work is ongoing,” Peskov said during a briefing for journalists.

The Kremlin spokesman clarified that Russia maintains a dialogue with the United States on a possible settlement, but is not currently in contact with Europe or Ukraine on this issue. At the same time, Russian President Vladimir Putin remains open to talks with all parties, he added.

When asked about a possible visit to Moscow by President Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, Peskov said that there is no specific information at this time, but the Kremlin will report any news on this. He also denied that Moscow perceives the US efforts as an ultimatum, stressing that the Kremlin welcomes Washington’s mediation role.

These developments highlight the difficulty of achieving peace in Ukraine, where the war has been going on for more than three years and the positions of the parties remain far from compromise.
