The British military is preparing for a possible deployment to Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping mission. Special Forces units have been put on high alert and their training is being coordinated by the Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ).

The i Paper reported this on 19 March, citing military sources.

British Special Forces are preparing to deploy to Ukraine

According to the newspaper, special forces have been ordered to prepare for a possible mission in Ukraine. This decision was made after the visit of British Defence Secretary John Healey to Washington last week.

“The UK’s military planning command centre, the Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ), received directives last week to begin the process of deploying personnel and resources,” The i Paper reports.

Reservists of the Special Forces have also been put on alert and are preparing military equipment for rapid deployment.

Britain prepares for international negotiations

The decision to put troops on alert was made against the backdrop of London’s preparations for international consultations to support the ceasefire agreement between Ukraine and Russia. Military leaders from countries that are ready to support the peace process are expected to arrive in the UK.

At the same time, the United Kingdom categorically rejected Russian President Vladimir Putin’s demand that Ukraine stop supplying weapons as a condition for a ceasefire.

What’s next?

There has been no official decision on a British peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, but the increase in preparations and diplomatic talks indicate that discussions on ending the fighting have intensified.

Whether this initiative will become a reality depends on further steps taken by both Kyiv and Ukraine’s international partners.
