Strengthening German-Ukrainian Relations
Manuela Schwesig, Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and President of the German Bundesrat, visited Kyiv on Monday, June 24, for talks with Ukraine’s political leadership. She emphasized that this visit symbolizes the solidarity of all 16 German federal states with Ukraine amidst Russian aggression.
Responding to Criticism of German Aid to Ukraine
Schwesig declared that Ukraine must win this war and that Russia should not achieve its goals through aggression. She addressed opposition within Germany, particularly from the eastern regions, against further support for Ukraine, stressing the importance of upholding the federal government’s course.
Shifting Position on ‘Nord Stream 2’
During her visit, Schwesig acknowledged her previous mistake in supporting the construction of the “Nord Stream 2” gas pipeline. She called for continued humanitarian, financial, and military support for Ukraine, including the provision of new weaponry such as Patriot systems. This visit reflects a change in Germany’s policy and its commitment to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
