After processing 30.5 million ballots, it was announced that liberal Masoud Pezeshkian has won and become Iran’s ninth president. According to the count, reformist Pezeshkian garnered support from 16.4 million Iranians, while his conservative rival, Said Jalili, secured 13.4 million votes.

In the first round of the early presidential elections in Iran, no candidate managed to surpass the necessary 50% threshold for victory. Pezeshkian received 10.4 million votes compared to Jalili’s 9.4 million, with a voter turnout of 40%. As no candidate crossed the 50% mark, a runoff was scheduled.

Masoud Pezeshkian has advocated for dialogue with the West and pledged to foster friendly relations. He has stated that his administration will immediately work towards lifting Western sanctions and reviving the economy.

Earlier, it was reported that the extraordinary presidential elections in Iran were called following the tragic death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash on May 19. The helicopter carrying him crashed, resulting in the loss of all nine people on board.
