NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has congratulated Donald Trump on his victory in the US presidential election on Tuesday, Reuters reports.
“I have just congratulated Donald Trump on his election as President of the United States. His leadership will once again be key to strengthening our Alliance. I look forward to working with him for peace and a stronger NATO,” Rutte said in a statement.
Republican candidate Donald Trump claimed an “unprecedented political victory” during a speech in West Palm Beach, Florida, after Fox News claimed he had defeated Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
Mark Rutte, the former prime minister of the Netherlands who took over as NATO secretary general on 1 October, is known for his ability to build communication with Trump. In 2019, during one of their meetings, Trump called Rutte his friend, according to the dpa news agency.
