Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been urgently summoned for questioning in the Qatargate case, a high-profile investigation into alleged illegal links with Qatar. As a result, today’s hearing in the Tel Aviv District Court, where Netanyahu was appearing in another trial, was urgently suspended after a closed-door discussion.
According to Israeli media, the Prime Minister will be interrogated in his office. Formally, he has been summoned to testify as a witness, but a further procedural decision – whether his status will be changed to a suspect – will be made after the interrogation.
The call was initiated by the government’s legal adviser, Gali Baarav-Miara, who had previously insisted on the need to hear the head of government in this case.
The QatarGate investigation is rapidly gaining momentum. Earlier, the police had already detained two key figures: Eli Feldstein and Prime Minister’s adviser Yonatan Urich. There are also reports of the detention of a journalist whose name has not yet been disclosed.
The case is being closely followed by political observers and international media alike, both because of its potential geopolitical significance and because it directly affects the current head of the Israeli government.
