On Wednesday, 5 March, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to the German government’s press service, the parties discussed the situation at the frontline, humanitarian challenges and possible ways to achieve a just peace for Ukraine.

Scholz expressed support for the Ukrainian side’s readiness to start peace talks as soon as possible. At the same time, both the German Chancellor and the Ukrainian President agreed on the important role of US President Donald Trump in establishing a ceasefire and building a lasting peace in Ukraine.

The first step towards de-escalation, according to the press release, could be a ceasefire in the air and at sea, as well as an end to attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Olaf Scholz and Volodymyr Zelenskyy agreed to continue close coordination with international partners to implement these plans.

The German Chancellor assured of his continued support for Ukraine: Berlin will continue to assist Kyiv, together with its European and international allies, until a just and sustainable peace is achieved.

For his part, the President of Ukraine stressed that Kyiv does not seek a temporary truce, but a complete end to the war, hoping for European unity in supporting Ukraine. Zelenskyy specifically thanked Germany for its assistance in strengthening Ukraine’s air defence and stressed his readiness to develop cooperation in this area.
