On 20 March 2025, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer convened a closed-door meeting with military leaders from a number of countries to discuss the creation of a peacekeeping force for Ukraine. This was reported by Bloomberg. The meeting took place against the backdrop of preparations for an international coalition that will include not only ground troops but also allied aircraft and navies.
Who is joining the coalition?
According to the publication, about 30 countries, mostly European, have expressed their readiness to provide resources for the peacekeeping mission. These include troops, combat aircraft, ships, intelligence and financial support. Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan have also joined the negotiations. At the same time, uncertainty remains over the participation of the United States: without the direct support of President Donald Trump and the US military, the plan may be difficult to implement.
Force deployment plans
British Armed Forces Minister Luke Pollard said that the focus is on logistics: where military assets will be based, how aircraft, including Typhoon fighters, will be maintained, and how they will be integrated with the resources of other countries. According to Bloomberg, European allies plan to deploy aircraft in Poland and Romania. The Black Sea may be patrolled by ships and minesweepers to ensure security.
Ground forces, including British and French units, could be deployed in key Ukrainian cities, ports and critical infrastructure.
How many troops will be involved?
Earlier, the media reported that the UK was ready to send 10,000 troops to Ukraine. However, the total number of foreign troops is likely to be much higher. Ireland, France, Denmark, Turkey, and Switzerland have already declared their readiness to join the peacekeeping mission.
What’s next?
The coalition’s plans are still under discussion. The meeting participants emphasise that the success of the mission will depend on coordination between the allies and a clear division of roles. However, without US participation, the implementation of such an ambitious project may face serious challenges.
This initiative is another step in supporting Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict. Further details on the timing and final composition of the peacekeeping force are expected in the near future.
