Washington, 7 March 2025 – The suspension of US military assistance to Ukraine is temporary and is a “pause in anticipation of a true commitment to peace”. This was stated by US Secretary of Defence Pete Hughes during a meeting at the Pentagon with UK Secretary of Defence John Healey, Voice of America reports.
“President Donald Trump is paying very close attention to what Ukrainians are saying and doing about their readiness for the peace process. We see positive signals and are encouraged by these steps,” Hegseth said.
What is known about “pause”
This statement came amid delays in new military aid packages for Kyiv, which has caused concern among Ukraine’s NATO and EU partners. The White House confirmed that it is currently assessing Kyiv’s policy on negotiations and potential peace terms.
Britain’s reaction
During the meeting, British Defence Secretary John Healey stressed that the UK would remain steadfast in its support for Ukraine and called on allies to act in a coordinated manner:
“We must stand together, because the stability of Europe and the international order depends on the outcome of this war,” said Healy.
What this means for Ukraine
Washington is signalling that it is ready to continue its support, but expects Kyiv to be more flexible in peace talks. At the same time, the allies stress the need to prevent Ukraine from weakening in the face of Russian aggression.
The focus now is on finding a balance between putting pressure on Moscow and preparing for possible diplomatic solutions that can guarantee Ukraine’s security and a stable peace.
