Poland Calls on EU to Counter Russian Disinformation Ahead of US Elections

Польща і ЄС

Poland has urged the European Union to take positive actions ahead of the US presidential election on November 5 to counter Russian “disinformation” aimed at creating divisions between the EU and Washington. This call to action was detailed in a document prepared for the EU foreign ministers’ meeting on Monday, as reported by Reuters.

Poland suggests that the EU should launch a campaign in the United States to highlight the importance of transatlantic relations to the American public. The document, seen by Reuters, emphasizes the need for “swift and firm measures to strengthen transatlantic relations through strategic communication about the EU in the US.”

The document calls for exposing and preemptively debunking Russian disinformation, as well as launching campaigns to clarify the current situation in Europe and the benefits of diplomacy, collective security, and an open society.

The Kremlin has denied any involvement in the upcoming US elections and has dismissed US accusations of orchestrating campaigns to influence the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections. However, the Polish document highlights that Russian state media and Kremlin-affiliated online accounts are spreading misleading content about immigration and US border security, distorting the impact of immigration by emphasizing crimes committed by immigrants and warning of dire consequences if the US does not take stringent measures at the Mexican border.

“We should expect much more, as reducing support for Ukraine remains Russia’s top priority. We need to remind the American public, especially the younger generation, about the benefits our decade-long partnership has brought to the American economy,” the document states.

Poland has declared that it has been the target of numerous Russian attempts to destabilize the situation and interfere in elections due to its role in providing military aid to Ukraine—claims that Russia denies.

“We need to raise awareness among the American public about the scale of European aid provided to Ukraine and how these efforts help save Ukrainian lives,” the Polish document asserts, referencing statements from US presidential candidate Donald Trump, who claimed that European aid to Ukraine is significantly less than that provided by the US.

Since the onset of the Russian invasion, the EU has provided Ukraine with €107 billion ($116.38 billion) and has agreed on an additional €50 billion in aid over the next four years. According to estimates by the Council on Foreign Relations, US support for Ukraine currently stands at $107 billion.
