President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a historic agreement with the Council of Europe to establish a Special Tribunal for the crime of aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine at the Palace of Europe. The signing was a key step towards establishing international justice, Ukrinform reports.
“This is a really important step. Today we are starting the process of establishing a tribunal to try Russia for its aggression against Ukraine. Every war criminal should know that there will be injustice, and this also applies to Russia,” Zelenskyy said after the signing.
The President stressed that the agreement creates real preconditions for bringing the Russian leadership to justice for the crimes of aggression. “We must clearly show that aggression leads to punishment. And we must do it together across Europe,” he added.
The Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, reaffirmed the support of the international community for Ukraine: “The role of the Council of Europe is to uphold justice and accountability. Through the ECHR, the Register of Damages and now through the Special Tribunal. Ukraine can count on us”.
This agreement marks not only the strengthening of Ukraine’s legal front in the war against Russia, but also the unification of European efforts to set a precedent for punishing aggression on the continent of the 21st century.
