Israel has detained about 30 people, mostly Jews, suspected of spying for Iran. According to the Shin Bet security service, the spy network operated in nine secret cells across the country. The detainees planned assassinations of Israeli scientists, including a nuclear scientist, as well as former military officers. They also collected information about military facilities, including bases and air defence systems, Reuters reports.

This operation is considered the largest attempt to spy for Iran in recent decades. Shin Bet officials said that the arrests were the result of longstanding efforts by Iranian intelligence officers who have been trying to recruit ordinary Israelis to gather intelligence and organise terrorist acts in exchange for money over the past two years.

Analysing the situation, officials note that this case demonstrates Iran’s active use of hybrid warfare methods, including the use of local agents to subvert Israel.
