During his visit to Kyiv, Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Wever announced a new aid package worth €1 billion in 2025 and promised annual military support of at least €1 billion throughout his government’s term.
This became known during a joint press conference with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“Our new government has decided to continue humanitarian and military support. We are allocating €1 billion for 2025, and this will be the minimum annual amount of military aid during my term,” de Wever said.
The visit to Kyiv was held at the highest level: the Prime Minister was accompanied by Foreign Minister Maxime Prevost and Defence Minister, who, according to de Wever, “is proud to announce a new aid package”.
Defence partnership: 4 new contracts
In addition to financial support, Belgium has declared its serious intentions to jointly produce weapons. To date, four defence contracts have already been signed in Kyiv, laying the groundwork for the placement of Belgian defence production directly in Ukraine.
“We need to help Ukraine strengthen its own defence industry while rearming Europe in the face of the new Russian threat,” the Belgian Prime Minister said.
He also called on the Belgian private sector to consider Ukraine as a promising market for investment in the military-industrial complex.
Belgium in the new European security architecture
This step is part of a pan-European trend towards deeper military-industrial integration with Ukraine. In the context of a protracted war, support of this magnitude not only strengthens the position of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but also cements Ukraine’s role as a future bulwark of European security.
