The European Union has fulfilled its commitment to provide Ukraine with one million pieces of ammunition and announced the training of another 75,000 Ukrainian soldiers by the end of winter. This was stated by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, in his column on the EU’s official website.
According to Borrell, since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, the European Union has provided Ukraine with 45 billion euros worth of weapons. However, despite the significant amount of assistance, this does not allow to change the course of the war in favour of Ukraine.
“We are giving Ukraine just enough to keep it going, and sometimes even less, while Russia has put its entire economy under martial law and is receiving support from North Korea and Iran,” Borrell said.
In addition to weapons, the EU invests in training the Ukrainian military. By the end of the winter, it is planned to complete the training of 75,000 Ukrainian soldiers under European programmes. This should strengthen Ukraine’s defence capabilities in the face of a prolonged war.
Despite the numerous arms deliveries and training programmes, Borrell emphasises that the current level of support remains insufficient to turn the tide on the frontline.
“Russia has mobilised all the resources for the war, while Ukraine is fighting in much more difficult conditions. We need to be ready to increase our assistance,” he said.
The European Union has repeatedly become Ukraine’s key partner in countering Russian aggression. However, the duration and scale of the war are forcing Western allies to look for new approaches to supporting Kyiv to ensure its ability not only to hold the line but also to launch a counter-offensive.
