On September 27, Brazil plans to meet in New York with representatives of 20 Global South nations to discuss its joint “six-point peace plan” with China for ending the war between Russia and Ukraine. This was reported by Reuters.
Countries expected to attend the meeting include Colombia, Egypt, Indonesia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the UAE, and others from the Global South. Notably, European governments, which are strong supporters of Ukraine, were not invited.
The meeting will be chaired by Celso Amorim, Brazil’s chief foreign policy advisor, who will aim to persuade participants to back the Brazil-China peace consensus. The plan calls for an immediate ceasefire, de-escalation, and the start of peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow but does not require Russia to withdraw its forces from occupied Ukrainian territories.
Brazil’s president reiterated his support for the proposal during his speech at the UN General Assembly, despite criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who called the plan destructive.
