German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has again rejected the possibility of supplying Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles. This is reported by n-tv, citing Scholz’s statement during a conference of delegates of the Social Democratic Party of Germany in Potsdam.
Scholz noted that Germany remains one of Ukraine’s largest military partners, but opposes the transfer of weapons that could be used to strike at Russian territory.
“We are taking a clear position against all the hotheads who think we should do all sorts of things,” the chancellor said, alluding to discussions among some Bundestag members who support the idea of transferring long-range weapons.
Scholz stressed that the government would not allow the use of German weapons to strike “deep into Russian territory”.
The Chancellor also stressed the need to avoid direct military conflict between NATO and Russia, calling the Taurus transfer a “wrong decision”.
Despite calls from some German politicians for more active support for Ukraine, the German government’s position on the supply of long-range weapons remains cautious, fearing an escalation of the conflict.
