The pro-Russian Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, tried to blackmail Ukraine with energy supplies by stopping the transit of Russian gas. However, these threats will not have any real consequences, as the Czech Republic and Germany are the main suppliers of electricity to Ukraine. This was stated by the Czech Foreign Ministry’s Special Envoy for Energy Security, Vaclav Bartuska, in an interview with Ukrinform.
Why don’t Fico’s actions matter?
Bartuska stressed that the political statements of the Slovak Prime Minister would not affect Ukraine’s energy supply.
“The political statement that Prime Minister Fico made in December is zero. We have four European countries bordering Ukraine, and at least two of them will not stop supplying electricity – Poland and Romania. What Slovakia and Hungary will do is not very important,” he said.
According to him, even in the most difficult moments of 2022, Europe supported Ukraine with equipment to repair its energy infrastructure, and the necessary spare parts came from the United States.
Europe will support Ukraine
Bartuska is convinced that solidarity with Ukraine will continue. The Czech Republic and its European partners will continue to help ensure the stability of Ukraine’s energy system, despite any political manipulations by governments trying to please the Kremlin.
