Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans said that European capitals have begun discussing the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine, but it is too early to talk about specific decisions. This was reported by Time Ukraine Israel, citing an interview with the official to De Volkskrant.
“We have to think about it now. But it is still in the early stages. Anything I say on this topic now will be premature. However, the discussion has already started in several capitals and may be gaining momentum,” the minister said.
Ukraine’s position and risks of premature agreements
According to Ruben Brekelmans, there are no concrete proposals to send troops yet, and it will take time to form a clear position. He stressed that hasty agreements on Ukraine could have dangerous consequences.
“The risk is that Russia now has an advantage. It can wait and dictate terms, putting Ukraine in a vulnerable position. No agreement can be concluded without Ukraine’s participation – they must be at the negotiating table. However, for this to happen, Ukraine needs a strong starting position, which can only be ensured by significant military resources,” the minister said.
Security guarantees for Ukraine
The minister also stressed that even after a potential ceasefire, Ukraine will need security guarantees, as Russia’s actions after any agreement remain unpredictable.
“We know that Putin can start testing the new agreement on the second day after it is signed. Ukraine must be protected, and for this we need clear guarantees,” added Ruben Brekelmans.
