The European Commission and the leading EU countries, including France, Germany, Italy and Denmark, are engaged in a joint dialogue with Hungary to lift its veto on the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration and Minister of Justice Olha Stefanishyna during a briefing in the Verkhovna Rada.
“We hope that the dialogue will be resumed, because it is not only Ukraine that is engaged in it, but also the European Commission, the governments of France, Germany, Italy and Denmark. Therefore, we are not alone, we are working together and we have quite high expectations that a decision will be made,” Stefanishyna said.
According to her, Hungary has not yet lifted its veto on the opening of negotiation clusters with Ukraine, but technical consultations are ongoing on issues of concern to Budapest, including national minorities.
Ukraine has already submitted to the European Commission proposals on minority policy that take into account all 11 points of concern raised by Hungary. In addition, the Verkhovna Rada is considering draft laws that take into account the European Commission’s recommendations in this area.
