The European Union is working on a new military aid package for Ukraine worth about 20 billion euros ($20.9 billion). Bloomberg reports this with reference to sources, Time Ukraine Israel cites.
The package will include artillery ammunition, air defence systems, precision missiles, drones and other weapons, as well as measures to strengthen Ukrainian military brigades.
According to the sources, the EU is seeking to reach an agreement in principle on this initiative at a meeting of foreign ministers next week. The final decision on the details of funding and distribution of aid will be made by EU leaders.
However, there is a risk that the process will be delayed, as Hungary has already stated that it will oppose new military support packages for Ukraine. Germany may also refrain from active participation due to the domestic political situation and the upcoming elections.
The initiative envisages contributions from EU member states and their allies in cash and in kind. According to Politico, these efforts are being coordinated by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas. According to the sources, the assistance is likely to be provided through individual contributions from member states rather than through a centralised EU fund, due to the position of Hungary and some other states.
