The Chief Diplomat of the European Union, Josep Borrell
The European Union expressed “extreme concern” over the escalating violence in Lebanon following Friday’s deadly attacks in Beirut and called for an “urgent” ceasefire. This statement was made on Sunday by the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, as reported by AFP.
“The European Union is deeply worried about the escalation in Lebanon after the attacks in Beirut on Friday,” Borrell stressed in a statement. He called for an “immediate ceasefire along the Blue Line as well as in Gaza.” The Blue Line has marked the separation between Lebanese and Israeli forces since 2000.
Borrell noted that “civilians are paying the highest price” while “intense fighting” continued on Sunday in both Israel and Lebanon.
He warned that civilians would once again suffer the most in a potential full-scale war, which must be avoided through renewed diplomatic efforts.
Next week, Borrell, alongside many global leaders, will be attending the annual UN General Assembly meeting in New York.
