Europe demands a clearer position: amendments to the UN resolution on the war in Ukraine

European countries, together with the United Kingdom, have proposed a number of amendments to the US draft resolution of the UN General Assembly on the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The amendments are aimed at making the document reflect the real situation and reflect the position of the majority of democratic countries.

According to an Ukrinform correspondent, at least 25 European Union countries and the United Kingdom propose three key changes. Instead of the term “Russian-Ukrainian conflict”, they insist on the wording “full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation”. It is also proposed to add a clause on commitment to the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders, including its territorial waters. In addition, the resolution should call for a just and comprehensive peace, not just a cessation of hostilities.

The US delegation called on UN member states to support their version of the document without changes and to abstain from voting for alternative drafts.

The General Assembly is scheduled to vote on 24 February. Two versions of the resolution are expected to be considered – the American and European versions. To adopt either of them, at least two-thirds of the total number of countries voting in favour or against must be collected.

The same day in the afternoon, the UN Security Council may consider another resolution on Ukraine, which is being prepared by the United States. Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Mariana Betsa will take part in the meeting.

International diplomacy is undergoing another test, which could be an important step in the fight for global security and support for Ukraine.
