The leaders of the European Union unanimously support the position that any decisions on the settlement of the war waged by Russia against Ukraine should be made only with the participation of Ukraine itself. This statement was made by the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola on the eve of the European Political Community Summit in Budapest.
“President Zelenskyy and US President-elect Donald Trump have already spoken twice – in September and yesterday. I promised President Zelenskyy during our meeting in Brussels that no decision about Ukraine’s future will be made without his participation,” Metsola said, commenting on the situation around Ukraine and the latest political changes in the United States.
The President of the European Parliament also stressed that European countries remain fully committed to this approach, especially on the eve of a difficult winter, which will be another test for Ukraine and its allies. “The thousandth day of the war is approaching. If we withdraw our support for Ukraine, what will be our message to the world and especially to Putin?” concluded Metsola.
European leaders continue to insist that only with Kyiv’s active participation can any peace initiatives be discussed, and that support for Ukraine remains an integral part of European security policy.
