The European Commission refrained from commenting directly on Ukraine’s strikes on Russian military airfields, but stressed Ukraine’s right to self-defence, enshrined in the UN Charter.
This was stated by the European Commission spokesperson Anouar El Anoumi during a briefing in Brussels, commenting on journalists’ questions about the attack of Ukrainian drones on Russian strategic aviation aircraft.
“It is not our business to comment on any strategy on the battlefield. What we can say is that Ukraine is defending itself in accordance with the UN Charter against Russia’s aggressive war,” El Anouni said.
The EU supports diplomatic efforts, but the decision is up to Ukraine
The spokesperson also commented on the meeting between Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul, stressing that the European Union supports diplomatic efforts aimed at a just, comprehensive and lasting peace.
“We will continue to support Ukraine, its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. But it is up to Ukraine to decide what the conditions for negotiations may be,” the EC representative said.
