On 12 May, a landmark meeting of European foreign ministers took place in London, during which the parties expressed strong support for Ukraine against the backdrop of ongoing Russian aggression. Following the talks, a joint statement was issued with clear political signals to the Kremlin, according to a statement from the British government.

The summit was attended by the Foreign Ministers of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the EU High Representative. The meeting was held within the framework of the Weimar+ group.

The participants reaffirmed their full solidarity with Ukraine, condemned the recent Russian attacks on civilians and reiterated their support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.

Ministers called for an immediate and comprehensive 30-day ceasefire to create space for negotiations on a “just, lasting and comprehensive peace”. At the same time, they emphasised: Russia has not yet shown any serious intention to make progress towards a peaceful settlement.

Particular attention was paid to the issue of security: European countries stressed the need for reliable security guarantees for Ukraine, including strengthening defence cooperation between the EU, NATO and the UK.

“A strong Ukrainian army is vital for the stability of the whole of Europe,” Weimar+ representatives concluded.
