The scandal erupted around the American TV channel Fox News, which for 20 minutes on air referred to Kyiv as a “Russian” city. The incident occurred during the broadcast of Easter celebrations from around the world, including the Ukrainian capital. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine called on the media outlet to issue a public apology and conduct an internal investigation.
This was announced by Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgiy Tykhyi on social network X (formerly Twitter), Ukrinform reports.
“If it was a mistake and not a deliberate political statement, we should apologise and investigate who made the mistake,” Tikhiy said.
The incident came to light after the broadcast of the celebrations from Kyiv showed a caption indicating that the city was allegedly part of Russia for a long time. Despite the fact that footage from other countries was also shown, it was the Ukrainian city that was referred to in an incorrect and openly propagandistic way.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasises that such mistakes are not only a matter of journalistic inattention, but also a potential play along with Russian disinformation in the global information space.
The Ukrainian side expects Fox News to respond promptly to the incident, provide explanations and apologise to the Ukrainian people.
“At a time when Ukrainians are giving their lives for freedom and the right to be themselves, such things are unacceptable. This is not just a technical error. This is a blow to the truth,” one of the diplomats said in a comment on condition of anonymity.
At the time of publication, Fox News did not comment publicly on the situation.
