In response to Ukraine’s growing demands for military support, the French government has officially announced the delivery of six Mirage 2000-5F fighter jets to the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF). The decision is of strategic importance, as the aircraft, which remain in service with the French Aerospace Forces (AAE), were originally scheduled to be in service until 2029. However, the decision to transfer these aircraft to Ukraine has become an important step in supporting the country fighting Russian aggression, TimeUkraineIsrael reports, citing Armyrecognition.

New strategic decision: supporting Ukraine through aircraft deliveries

The process of transferring the fighter jets was initiated following President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement in June 2024, when he confirmed his intention to provide Ukraine with six Mirage 2000-5F fighter jets. These aircraft, known for their speed, manoeuvrability and power, will be modified to increase their effectiveness on the battlefield, including through advanced electronic warfare systems and the ability to launch air-to-ground munitions. The first deliveries are planned for the first half of 2025, which will allow Ukrainian pilots and technicians to receive the necessary training to operate these aircraft effectively.

Emerging challenges for French aviation

The transfer of such advanced aircraft has significant implications for French aviation, as it affects the operation of the already limited French fighter fleet. The gradual reduction in the number of Mirage 2000-5Fs will force the French Air Force to rely on other models, such as the Rafale and upgraded Mirage 2000D. However, these changes will increase maintenance and operational readiness (MRO) costs, as well as affect the availability of the aircraft to carry out their missions. In particular, French fighters are already on the verge of optimisation, and this could temporarily reduce the number of combat aircraft by 2030.

Technical features of Mirage 2000-5F and their strategic importance for Ukraine

The Mirage 2000-5F is one of the most advanced French air defence fighter aircraft. The aircraft is equipped with high-tech systems, including the RDY radar and MICA missiles, which allows it to carry out missions ranging from air superiority to nuclear raid support. An upgraded cockpit with five digital screens and the HOTAS control system allow pilots to respond as quickly as possible to the situation in combat. The Mirage 2000-5F can reach speeds of up to Mach 2.2 and fly at altitudes of up to 50,000 feet, making it an extremely effective air combat capability.

Implications for the operational readiness of French aviation

This fighter jet deal has an impact on the operational readiness of the French air force, which has already suffered some losses. Two Rafale B fighters were lost in combat, which further complicates the maintenance situation. At the same time, the French Aerospace Forces are scheduled to receive new upgraded Mirage 2000Ds and 137 new Rafales by 2030. However, these losses, together with the transfer of six Mirage 2000-5Fs, may temporarily reduce the number of combat aircraft capable of performing operations.

Prospects for cooperation with Ukraine and further deliveries

While the delivery of six fighter jets is an important contribution to support for Ukraine, it also highlights the need for careful planning of other aircraft, including the Rafale, to ensure that the Mirage 2000-5F is replaced. The planned restructuring of the French Air Force should take into account the needs of both French national defence and strategic support to Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.

This strategic initiative not only strengthens Ukraine’s defence capabilities, but also poses new challenges for France to maintain its aviation capabilities, particularly in light of future military programmes and international commitments.
