Germany’s military support for Ukraine
Germany continues to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression by providing large-scale military assistance. The deliveries include equipment, ammunition, air defence equipment, drones and other weapons, which are financed both from the federal government and Bundeswehr warehouses. This was reported by the Time Ukraine Israel portal, citing the German government’s website.
Financing of aid
As of 2024, Germany has allocated more than €28 billion for military support to Ukraine, including:
- 7.1 billion in 2024 to finance supplies and contributions to the European Peace Fund;
- 6 billion for future liabilities;
- EUR 5 billion was spent in 2023 and EUR 1.6 billion in 2022.
An additional €2.9 billion has been allocated for deliveries until 2028.
Key deliveries
- Armour and weapons:
- 140 MARDER infantry fighting vehicles;
- 88 LEOPARD 1 A5 main battle tanks;
- 18 LEOPARD 2 A6 tanks;
- 66 armoured personnel carriers.
- Air defence systems:
- IRIS-T SLM (5 systems) and IRIS-T SLS (4 systems);
- 55 GEPARD systems with 176,000 rounds of ammunition;
- PATRIOT missiles and 3 PATRIOT systems.
- Artillery:
- 24 Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzers;
- 5 MARS II multiple launch rocket systems;
- 306 thousand 155 mm artillery shells.
- Drones and anti-drone systems:
- 368 VECTOR drones, 369 RQ-35 HEIDRUNs, 70 unmanned surface vessels;
- 200 mobile jammers to combat drones.
- Engineering:
- 27 BEAVER bridge paving tanks;
- 57 WISENT demining machines 1;
- 22 Bergepanzer armoured evacuation vehicles 2.
Training of the military
More than 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been trained in Germany. A total of €282 million was spent on this.
Significance for Ukraine
Germany has become one of the leaders in supporting Ukraine’s defence capabilities. Military assistance has significantly strengthened the capabilities of the Ukrainian army in countering the aggressor and consolidated strategic cooperation between the two countries.
