The Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal has announced that the Cabinet of Ministers has allocated more than UAH 10 billion to strengthen the protection of energy infrastructure from Russian attacks. He made the announcement on his Telegram channel on Friday, 27 December.
Priority is to protect the power grid
During his visit to Zaporizhzhia, Shmyhal inspected a power facility that had been damaged by a Russian strike.
“The energy infrastructure is constantly under Russian shelling. The frontline regions are particularly affected. To minimise damage, we are implementing projects to build protection systems around energy facilities. This is a priority for each region,” the Prime Minister said.
Three levels of protection for energy facilities
Ukraine’s power system is protected from missile and drone attacks using a three-tier system. Currently, most of the country’s energy facilities are equipped with the second level of protection, which is able to withstand direct hits from shakedown drones and mitigate the effects of missile attacks.
These projects have been actively implemented over the past two years, and their importance is only growing amid the constant shelling.
The allocation of significant funding to strengthen energy security demonstrates Ukraine’s readiness to counter Russian aggression and reduce the impact of attacks on critical infrastructure. The government continues to invest in the restoration and protection of the energy system, which is an important component of national security.
