Green light for Ukraine: Will a change in US political leadership open the way to NATO?

There is a heated debate in the US political circles about the future leadership of the country and its impact on geopolitical positions. If Kamala Harris wins the presidential election in November, Joe Biden may have the opportunity to move towards opening NATO’s doors to Ukraine, sources say. This could be a turning point in the discussions on Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance, where the US plays a key role.

According to the French newspaper Le Monde, the US government no longer has any fundamental objections to Ukraine’s invitation to join NATO. This statement comes against the backdrop of recent consultations between the leaders of the leading Western countries – the United States, Germany, France and the United Kingdom – who, however, have different views on this issue. According to sources, US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer failed to reach a consensus on their positions regarding Ukraine’s future in NATO.

“It’s an ambitious plan, dealing with complex issues on which there is no spontaneous convergence of opinion,” said one Western diplomat close to the discussions.

The historical context underlines the complexity of the debate: Turkey and Hungary are expected to oppose Ukraine’s accession to NATO. At the same time, the US position on Ukraine’s invitation could change the balance of power in Europe, which would affect the position of Germany, a country that has been cautious on this issue so far.

American political processes are likely to be critical to future decisions. If Kamala Harris becomes president of the United States, Biden, according to diplomats, will have a chance to use the transition period to advance this important issue. However, if Donald Trump wins, the chances of moving forward with Ukraine’s accession to NATO could be sharply reduced, and any initiative by Biden could be detrimental to the situation.

Despite these challenges, Ukraine continues to insist on its path to NATO. On 16 October, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy unveiled his Victory Plan, the first point of which is an immediate invitation to join the Alliance. This signals Kyiv’s determination to achieve this strategic goal despite all political obstacles.

Whether this issue will be resolved in the near future depends on many factors, including the US elections and Germany’s future stance. In any case, the situation remains tense, and the outcome could change the geopolitical landscape of Europe for years to come.
