Former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Galant, who was dismissed in November by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over disagreements on the war in the Gaza Strip, has announced his resignation from the parliament. This was reported by AFP.

“I will submit my resignation to the Speaker of the Knesset,” Galant said in a televised address on Wednesday.

“I served the country for 35 years in the army and decades in the government and the Knesset. The moment has come when we need to pause and rethink the direction in which to move forward,” he added.

From general to politician

Yoav Galant, a former general known for his tough stance on security, played a key role after the 7 October 2023 Hamas attack that catalysed the war in the Gaza Strip.

However, his decision to mobilise 10,000 men from the ultra-Orthodox community, allies of Netanyahu, caused outrage in these circles, eventually leading to his resignation as defence minister.

Liabilities for because

In his address, Gallant stressed that he would not abandon his efforts to return Israeli citizens who remain hostages in the Gaza Strip after the tragic events of October.

“I will continue to work with all my dedication to bring home all the since,” he stressed.

Galant’s decision to leave the parliament came as a surprise to Israel’s political environment, as he remains an influential figure in the security sector.
