At the summit in Brussels on 13 February, an important decision was made on further military support for Ukraine. From now on, NATO will coordinate security assistance and training for the Ukrainian military. This was announced by Ukraine’s Defence Minister Rustem Umerov at a joint briefing with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
US and allies stand with Ukraine
According to Umerov, NATO member states’ support for Ukraine remains unchanged, and the United States will continue to provide security assistance.
“We see that all our allies support us. The US is with us, continuing to provide security assistance. NATO is taking over our security and training assistance – this is already in progress. This has been decided. We are grateful to NATO and the leadership of the Alliance.”
The Minister stressed that Ukraine remains strong and capable of defending its independence thanks to international support.
The goal is to strengthen Ukraine’s position before the negotiations
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stressed the importance of continuing military assistance to Ukraine to ensure a sustainable and lasting peace.
“We must do everything to ensure that Ukraine is in the best possible position when peace talks begin. And the main thing is to ensure that after they are completed, Vladimir Putin will never again try to seize a single square kilometre of Ukrainian land.”
Thus, NATO has not only reaffirmed its resolve to support Ukraine, but has also officially assumed a key role in training and strengthening the defence capabilities of Ukrainian troops. This is another step towards Ukraine’s integration into the Euro-Atlantic security space.
