NATO Parliamentary Assembly calls for medium-range missiles for Ukraine

Країни-члени НАТО

NATO’s Parliamentary Assembly has adopted a resolution calling on Allied governments to provide Ukraine with powerful missiles with a range of up to 5,500 km. This decision opens the legal basis for further transfer of weapons capable of hitting strategic targets in Russia, according to MP Yehor Chernev, head of the Verkhovna Rada’s permanent delegation to the NATO PA.

Key provisions of the resolution

  1. Tougher sanctions against Russia and its allies, including North Korea.
  2. Providing Ukraine with self-defence capabilities, including medium-range missiles (1000-5500 km).
  3. Support for strikes at the strategic depth of the Russian Federation as an element of deterring aggression.

Chernev stressed that the resolution is the first step towards creating legal grounds for NATO member governments to take appropriate decisions. The MP mentioned the US Tomahawk missiles as an example of such weapons.

Previous initiatives

At its last session, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly had already supported the idea of allowing Ukraine to strike deep into Russian territory, raising the issue to the political level. The current resolution reinforces the call for Ukraine to be provided with the means to do so.

Expectations and prospects

The Ukrainian delegation hopes for a positive decision by NATO governments. Adoption of such measures could be a serious enhancement of Ukraine’s defence potential and a lever to deter Russian aggression.

This move also demonstrates the growing support for Ukraine among its allies at the international level.
