Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that the country will continue to stand firm against the Houthis in Yemen, accusing them of threatening international shipping and global order. His statement came on Sunday after a rocket fired from Yemen struck an area near Tel Aviv, causing light injuries to several people, The Jerusalem Post reported.
“Just as we have acted with force against terrorist cells of the Iranian-led axis of evil, we will do the same against the Houthis,” Netanyahu said in a video message.
The Houthis, who control the Yemeni capital Sanaa and other parts of the country, first attacked Israeli-affiliated ships in the Red and Arabian Seas. However, later they began to attack Israeli territory, cooperating with pro-Iranian forces in Iraq.
Saturday’s bombardment of Tel Aviv came two days after Israeli airstrikes on Yemen’s energy and port infrastructure. These actions were in response to hundreds of rocket and drone attacks carried out by the Houthis since the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas 14 months ago.
The escalation of tensions between the parties indicates the expansion of the regional conflict, where both Iran’s direct and indirect allies play a key role. Israel continues to act within the framework of its strategy of tough counteraction to threats aimed at increasing instability in the region.
