Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has made yet another harsh statement about Ukraine, calling its upcoming accession to the European Union the biggest challenge for his country.
He said this on Sunday, 18 May, during a party forum of the ruling Fidesz party in Budapest. His speech was reported by the Hungarian state-run MTI news agency.
“Ukraine was a non-functional bankrupt before the war. It was destroyed by the war, it needs money and that’s why it wants to join the EU,” Orban said.
Charges against Kyiv and Brussels
The Hungarian leader accused the Ukrainian government of allegedly not taking into account the damage it could do to Europe and seeking to integrate into the EU at the expense of others:
“They don’t care that they will bring war to the EU, destroy farmers, drag us into conflict, turn a safe country into a mafia nest,” Orban said.
He also criticised Brussels, accusing it of trying to “impose a pro-Ukrainian coalition” on all EU members.
“Attacks by special services” and “slander from abroad”
In his speech, Orban also spoke about an alleged “series of operations by Ukrainian special services against Hungary” and a “paid smear campaign” allegedly funded by foreign forces.
“We must and will resist,” he stressed.
These words once again confirm that the official Budapest plans to continue to slow down Ukraine’s European integration processes.
