On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the world not to forget the lessons of history and to fight against hatred and indifference.

On 27 January, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on his Telegram channel:

“The world commemorates the victims of the Holocaust. It was a deliberate attempt by the Nazis to wipe out an entire nation – to kill all its people, to destroy everything that reminded them of Jews. Six million victims. The crime of the Holocaust must never be repeated.”

The President stressed that, unfortunately, the memory of the Holocaust is gradually weakening, while the evil capable of destroying entire nations still exists in the world.

The day before, the President, together with rabbis, diplomats and government officials, took part in events dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust. The participants honoured the memory of millions of men, women and children who perished during this horrific crime.

Zelensky called on society to fight for the sake of life and not to remain indifferent, because:

“Indifference is fertiliser for evil. We must overcome the hatred that breeds abuse and murder. We must not allow forgetfulness.”

International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is marked annually on 27 January, was established by the UN General Assembly in 2005. The day commemorates the tragedy of six million Jews who fell victim to the Nazi genocide during World War II.
