German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has explained the reasons for refusing to transfer Taurus missiles to Ukraine, stressing the importance of target control, which he is not ready to assume. Speaking at a briefing at the G20 summit, Scholz stressed that this issue is not only about technical aspects, but is also politically and ethically important for Germany, Time Ukraine Israel portal reports, citing Aspi.
“This is a responsibility that I cannot and do not want to take on,” Scholz said, explaining why Germany refrains from supplying high-tech weapons such as Taurus missiles. According to him, the artillery and rocket launchers that have already been transferred to Ukraine have a long range, but their use has clear limits, in particular to prevent attacks deep into Russian territory. The Chancellor also noted that Germany, while supporting Ukraine, should act reasonably and prudently to avoid escalation of the conflict.
Scholz stressed that the war in Ukraine is not an internal conflict for Ukraine alone, but affects the whole of Europe, including the security and stability of Germany. “This war affects us all, and it is therefore important that we act responsibly and support Ukraine by finding the right solutions and clearly articulating our position on Russia,” he said.
The chancellor also mentioned an exception to the provision of weapons for the defence of Kharkiv, where Germany decided to help Ukraine due to the proximity of the fighting to the city. “When the attacks came close to the border, we decided to provide assistance for the defence of Kharkiv, which was the right step,” Scholz added. However, he stressed that this case does not change the general principles that guide Germany’s policy of supporting Ukraine.
