British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has arrived in Kyiv for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The meeting, widely covered by The Guardian, is aimed at concluding a new partnership agreement between the two countries that will deepen their defence relations and determine possible forms of long-term military assistance to Ukraine.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed what security guarantees the UK could provide to Kyiv, especially in light of growing concerns about a potential reduction in US support for Ukraine. Among the options proposed were the participation of British troops in a post-war peacekeeping force, as well as the expansion of military training programmes and arms supplies.

A new defence strategy

The Starmer-Zelenskyy talks were a key moment in strengthening the strategic partnership between London and Kyiv. Ukraine highly appreciates Britain’s contribution to the fight against Russian aggression, but as Zelenskyy stressed, it is critical that the support of Western allies is maintained in the long term.

“Refusing to support Ukraine will lead to even more aggression, chaos and war,” Zelenskyy said, calling for decisive action to deter the Kremlin.

Amid uncertainty in US policy towards Ukraine, the UK is seeking to strengthen its role in supporting Kyiv. Starmer, whose government is actively promoting defence supplies to Ukraine, stressed that London will continue to play a leading role in ensuring stability in the region.

The British prime minister also said he was ready to discuss new forms of cooperation, including strengthening Ukraine’s defence capabilities and supporting its economy in times of war.

Zelenskyy and Starmer stressed the importance of unity among Western allies. The terms of the new agreement between Ukraine and the UK could become the basis for similar agreements with other countries, which would help strengthen the overall security system in Europe.

“Our partnership with Britain is a key element in ensuring peace and stability in the region,” Zelenskyy said.
