Rome Visit: A Strategic Partnership
According to Bloomberg.Prime Minister Keir Starmer has traveled to Rome to secure Italy’s support for allowing Ukraine to use British Storm Shadow cruise missiles for long-range strikes against Russia. This visit is part of broader strategic negotiations aimed at expanding military aid to Ukraine.
Meeting with Giorgia Meloni
During his visit, Starmer is set to meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The main topic will be the potential use of British Storm Shadow missiles by Ukraine for strikes on Russian targets. Additionally, they are expected to discuss deepening economic relations and addressing illegal migration.
US Position and International Discussions
This visit follows Starmer’s meeting with US President Joe Biden in Washington, where the possibility of providing Storm Shadow missiles was discussed. Biden expressed concerns that supplying such weapons might escalate the conflict.
European Level Plans
British officials will also engage with French and German counterparts in the coming days to build consensus on supporting Ukraine. These discussions are expected to focus on reinforcing unity among European allies regarding Ukraine’s reconstruction and countering hybrid threats from Russia.
Rebooting Relations with Europe
Starmer’s visit to Rome is part of broader efforts to reboot the UK’s relationship with Europe. He aims to strengthen economic ties with the EU without rejoining the single market or customs union.
Tackling Illegal Migration
Aside from military matters, Starmer and Meloni will discuss plans to combat illegal migration. Starmer is interested in Italy’s experience in reducing migration pressure, including their successes in directing refugees to camps in Albania.
Domestic Challenges for Starmer
Amid international negotiations, Starmer faces domestic criticism over his decision to cancel winter fuel payments for pensioners and controversies surrounding unreported gifts from millionaire donor Wahid Ali. These issues may further complicate his political standing.
Future Negotiations
Regarding Storm Shadow missiles, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated that further negotiations will take place later this month with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the UN. This will allow for a detailed assessment of Ukraine’s needs and preparation for the winter ahead.
