Sweden is providing Ukraine with the largest military aid package since the start of the full-scale war, with a total value of 16 billion kronor, equivalent to 1.475 billion euros. The country’s authorities made this decision given the difficult situation at the front and the need to strengthen Ukraine’s defence capabilities, The Economic Times reports.
Swedish Defence Minister Pal Johnson stressed that the war is in a critical phase, and Ukraine needs to strengthen its positions as much as possible. According to him, this aid package includes the purchase of weapons, financial support for the Ukrainian defence industry and the transfer of equipment from Swedish army warehouses.
In particular, about nine billion kronor will be spent on the purchase of new military equipment manufactured in Sweden and other European countries. Another five billion will go to support Ukraine’s defence industry and various funds. The remaining funds, approximately 500 million kronor, will be used to transfer equipment from the Swedish army’s warehouses.
Since February 2022, Sweden has already provided Ukraine with military assistance totalling €7.3 billion. The transferred weapons include 26 Archer self-propelled artillery systems, 50 CV90 infantry fighting vehicles, ten Leopard 2 tanks, as well as air defence systems and other military equipment.
The Government of Sweden continues to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression and emphasises the need to strengthen Kyiv’s defence capabilities to effectively counter the enemy and strengthen its negotiating position in the future.
