Brigade commanders of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will have more autonomy in choosing drones. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has supported the initiative of the Ministry of Defence to finance the purchase of drones for the Armed Forces on a monthly basis. This was announced by Defence Minister Rustem Umerov on 21 January.

Experience of December 2024

In December last year, the Ministry of Defence transferred UAH 2.1 billion to combat units for the first time to purchase drones. According to Umerov, this approach has proven to be effective:

“This made it possible to quickly meet the needs of our teams and increase the diversification of centralised management,” the minister said.

Analysing the results, the Ministry of Defence decided to scale up the initiative, and now UAH 2.5 billion will be allocated for this purpose every month.

Benefits of the new approach

According to the new decision, brigade commanders will be able to choose the types of drones that best suit the specifics of their tasks at the front. This will allow:

  • To respond quickly to the current challenges of combat operations;
  • Optimise procurement based on tactical needs;
  • Increase the efficiency of the use of funds.

Defence financing

This decision is part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen Ukraine’s defence capabilities. Amid the ongoing war with Russia, the provision of advanced technologies that will help the Armed Forces maintain the initiative on the battlefield remains a priority.
