The EU summit is actively discussing the possibility of Germany supplying long-range Taurus missiles capable of hitting targets at a distance of up to 500 kilometres. European Parliament President Roberta Mecola expressed support for this decision, stressing the need for Berlin to respond quickly to provide Ukraine with effective means of defence against Russian aggression, the German news agency DPA reported.
In an interview with the Funke Mediengruppe, Metzola clearly stated that Ukraine should have the right to use long-range missiles to strike targets in Russia. “This is also the position of the European Parliament. It has broad support,” she said, suggesting that changes in Berlin’s policy could occur even before the next Bundestag elections.
Scholz’s resistance and coalition pressure
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz continues to maintain a cautious stance, fearing an escalation of the conflict between Russia and the West. However, his coalition partners, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Greens, support the transfer of Taurus missiles to Ukraine.
Metzola also reminded that there are disagreements within the German coalition on this issue. The situation has taken a new turn after the US decision to allow Ukraine to use ATACMS missiles, which have a range of up to 300 km, including for strikes on Russian territory.
Strategic perspective
The Taurus missiles, which have an even longer range (500 km), could significantly enhance Ukraine’s defence capabilities. European politicians from the EPP group, to which Mecola belongs, along with the German CDU and CSU, also actively support the supply of these missiles.
The debate continues to heat up, and Berlin is under increasing pressure from its allies. The decision on Taurus missiles could be one of the key moments in supporting Ukraine in the face of ongoing Russian aggression.
