The EU supports Turkey’s mediation role in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine

Thomas Hans Ossowski, Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey.

The European Union welcomes Turkey’s initiative to mediate in potential peace talks to end the Russian-Ukrainian war. This was stated by the head of the EU Delegation to Turkey, Thomas Hans Ossowski, Ukrinform reports .

“Turkey today is offering to play a role in any negotiations that we also hope will end this criminal operation of Russia against Ukraine, so this is more than welcome,” Ossowski said.

He stressed that Ankara had already played an important role in efforts to de-escalate the war, including the launch of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which ensured the export of Ukrainian grain during the fighting. The diplomat also mentioned Turkey’s role as a guarantor of the Montreux Convention.

“Turkey has made a huge contribution to stabilising the situation in the Black Sea by preventing Russian warships from continuing their criminal activities against Ukraine,” the EU representative said.

This position demonstrates the growing confidence in Turkey on the part of its European partners and its potential participation in the future peace process.
