The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering recognising Russia’s control over Crimea as part of a broader peace deal with Ukraine. Bloomberg reports, citing sources familiar with the negotiations.

According to the newspaper, the US has proposed a plan that would see a ceasefire along the entire frontline and the recognition of Russia’s de facto control over Crimea. In return, Moscow would have to agree to reduce the level of hostilities and participate in further negotiations. However, the White House has not yet officially confirmed this information.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that the United States may withdraw from mediation if there is no progress in the talks in the coming days. He stressed that both sides must demonstrate a willingness to compromise.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not yet commented on the possibility of recognising Crimea as Russian. However, he has previously stated that Ukraine’s territorial integrity cannot be negotiated.

Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014 after an illegal referendum. The international community, including the US and the EU, does not recognise the annexation and has imposed sanctions on Russia.

Negotiations on a peaceful settlement of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia continue, but have not yet achieved significant progress. The United States and its allies are calling for a ceasefire and the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

According to Reuters, the Trump administration is considering ending mediation efforts if there is no progress in the talks. At the same time, The Times reports on the differences in approaches between the US and European allies regarding the terms of the peace agreement.

According to The Guardian, Ukraine has signed a memorandum of cooperation with the US in the field of minerals extraction, which may become part of a broader agreement. However, official Kyiv insists on preserving the country’s territorial integrity.

If the US recognises Russia’s control over Crimea, it could have serious consequences for international law and the security system in Europe. Such a move could set a precedent for other conflicts and weaken Ukraine’s position in the international arena.

The possible recognition by the United States of Russia’s control over Crimea as part of a peace agreement with Ukraine is causing concern among the international community. Such a move could have far-reaching implications for security in Europe and international law. Further developments will depend on the willingness of the parties to compromise and respect the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
