On 18 November, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, addressed a meeting of the UN Security Council, where he sharply criticised the wording of the resolution on the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. He stressed that any resolution that does not include conditions for the release of hostages is unacceptable and threatens Israel’s security. “Any resolution that does not condition a ceasefire on the release of our hostages means leaving 101 people in hell, in the hands of terrorist monsters,” he said. This was reported by the TimeUkraineIsrael portal with reference to Israel’s Channel 7.
Danon also stressed that this decision only strengthens Hamas’ position and supports terrorism, forcing Israel to effectively abandon its obligations to release the hostages. “We cannot allow the UN to tie Israel’s hands by depriving us of the ability to protect our citizens,” he added.
The Ambassador confirmed that Israel will not stop fighting until all abducted citizens are returned home.
The text of the resolution being prepared for voting does not include clear requirements for the return of hostages and does not recognise Hamas as a terrorist organisation. This caused outrage in Israel, as the issue of hostage release is a key one for the state when discussing any peace initiatives.
This issue has already become an important political point in the international arena, and the resolution of this problem may affect further steps in peace negotiations and relations between states supporting different sides of the conflict.
