Ukraine, together with its key international allies, has announced its readiness for a full and unconditional ceasefire – on land, in the air and at sea – starting on Monday, 12 May. This step was the result of consultations of the “Coalition of the Resolute”, which includes the leaders of France, Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom and the United States. This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sybiga.

The statement was made after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Prime Ministers of Poland Donald Tusk and the United Kingdom’s Keir Starmer. After the talks in Kyiv, the leaders held a joint phone call with US President Donald Trump.

“If Russia agrees and effective monitoring is ensured, a temporary ceasefire could be the first step towards real peace,” Sibiga said.

The so-called “deadline” for Moscow is 12 May. If Russia fails to give a clear signal of consent to end the fighting, the allies are ready to resort to new measures of pressure.

The proposed 30-day ceasefire should create space for a long-term dialogue, confidence-building measures and, ultimately, a full-fledged peace process.
