The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine condemned Russia’s unprecedented hybrid attack on democratic processes in Romania and expressed full solidarity with the Romanian people.
“Russia’s interference in Romania’s internal affairs is a bold attempt to deprive the Romanian people of their right to free expression of their will. This is part of the Kremlin’s broader hybrid aggression against Europe and the free world,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Hybrid attacks: a threat to Europe
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry stressed that this incident only confirms the scale of the Kremlin’s aggressive plans, which go far beyond Ukraine. Earlier, similar attempts at destabilisation were recorded in Georgia, Moldova and other EU and NATO countries.
“The response to such threats must be joint and decisive. Maximum support for Ukraine in countering Russian aggression is a guarantee of stability in Europe and the world,” the statement said.
Romania is an important partner of Ukraine
Kyiv noted that Romania is a reliable ally that firmly supports Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression.
“We hope that the Romanian people will be able to exercise their right to vote without foreign interference. Our solidarity with Romania remains unwavering,” the Foreign Ministry added.
On 6 December, the Romanian Constitutional Court annulled the results of the first round of the presidential election. The decision was made after the declassification of data indicating a coordinated online campaign by Russia in support of a far-right candidate.
This move is one of the biggest scandals in Romania’s recent history, demonstrating the serious threat posed by Russia’s hybrid methods of influencing democratic processes.
