Ambassador of Ukraine to the United Kingdom Valeriy Zaluzhnyi held an important meeting with Secretary General of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Arsenio Dominguez, during which the parties discussed the fight against Russia’s “shadow fleet” and Ukraine’s needs for maritime security.

Ambassador of Ukraine to the United Kingdom Valeriy Zaluzhnyi discussed the fight against Russia’s shadow fleet and the development of Ukraine’s maritime potential with the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organisation Arsenio Dominguez, Zaluzhnyi said on his official Telegram channel, noting that he also presented credentials to the IMO Secretary-General.

“We talked about cooperation, the fight against the ‘shadow fleet’ and Ukraine’s needs to develop its maritime potential. Ukraine is a maritime state. And we are keeping this course, even in a storm,” said Valeriy Zaluzhnyi.

Russia’s “shadow fleet ” is made up of illegal tankers and vessels that evade international sanctions, transporting oil, weapons and other resources using false flags and switched off transponders.

Ukraine has repeatedly called on the international community to strengthen control over such vessels, as they pose not only an economic but also an environmental threat.

Cooperation with the International Maritime Organisation should be another step in strengthening maritime security, blocking illegal shipments from Russia and ensuring free and safe navigation in the Black Sea.
