Today, an important meeting was held in Ukraine to discuss the return of servicemen who were captured. Family members of soldiers from the military unit 3033 received answers to their questions from representatives of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, the Joint Centre at the Security Service of Ukraine, the Ministry of Reintegration, the National Guard, the NIB and the military unit. This was reported by TimeUkraineIsrael, citing the telegram channel of the Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets.
Absence of ICRC representatives
One of the key points discussed during the meeting was the absence of representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The Ombudsman’s representative, Yuriy Kovbasa, explained that the organisation works with private data, so families can contact them individually. This information has raised concerns, as many relatives are seeking detailed information about the health of their loved ones who remain in captivity.
Violation of the Geneva Conventions
The conversation also touched upon the issue of Russia’s compliance with the Geneva Conventions. Representatives of government agencies stressed that, unfortunately, Russia continues to ignore international norms, which leads to the critical condition of prisoners of war returning home. However, on a positive note, Russia agreed to a visit by Turkey’s Chief Ombudsman, Şeref Malkoçu, to places of detention for prisoners of war, which could improve the situation.
Priorities in repatriation
The meeting also discussed the priorities set out in the Geneva Conventions for the repatriation of prisoners of war. First and foremost, seriously ill, severely wounded and women are to be returned. The principles of justice require the speedy return of those who have been captured since 2014, as well as family members who have gone missing or died. It is important to note that in 2024, Ukraine managed to return a significant number of citizens to their homeland.
Progress in the return of prisoners
To date, Ukraine has managed to return 3,767 citizens from enemy captivity. Countries such as Qatar and the United Arab Emirates play a significant role in this process, actively cooperating with the Ukrainian side. The work is ongoing, and Ukrainian representatives continue their efforts to bring their citizens home.
This meeting was an important step in ensuring the rights of prisoners of war and supporting their families, as human life and health should always be a priority. Ukraine manages not only to return its servicemen but also to keep in touch with international partners, which is a key factor in this important matter.
